The modern city centre is still divided into the seven medieval thoroughfares: the Seagait, Murraygait, Marketgait (now High Street), Nethergait, Overgait, Wellgait and the Cowgait- “Gait” being a Scots word for street- which all remain today (albeit with modified spelling and with both the "Overgate" and "Wellgate" having become enclosed shopping centres.)

Balgay today is primarily a residential area, with a variety of housing, including traditional tenements and newer developments. The neighbourhood is well-connected to Dundee’s city centre and is located close to other notable areas, such as Lochee and Perth Road.

Previously, the A991 met the A85 at the Riverside roundabout, beside Dundee Railway Station; and just to the east, the A92 at a grade-separated junction at the northern terminus of the Tay Road Bridge. As of 2015, this has been replaced by a grid scheme of streets, with the east and westbound carriageways of the A991 now separate streets.
