The "Madhya Vidyalaya (Central College)" concept (English: Central College) is a type of state school in Sri Lanka. Originally mooted in the 1930s by C.W.W. Kannangara , 54 Central Colleges were founded between 1943 and 1947 as part of his initiative to establish free education in Sri Lanka .

The head of the college, Joseph G. Jayasuriya, became the college's first principal. At that time Marsalin Jayakody wrote the college's current anthem in Sinhala. By then the college had become a Sinhala school. Tamil students were transferred to Vivekananda Vidyalaya and Sahira Vidyalaya. In 1972 the college was established as a Grade 1AB school.
The school was founded in 1921. [4] It was promoted to Madhya Maha Vidyalayam status in 1946. [5] The school, like most schools in the north and east of Sri Lanka, was severely affected by the Sri Lankan Civil War.
