The Arkansas City Commercial Historic District is a 21 acres (8.5 ha) historic district at Summit St. and 5th Ave. in Arkansas City, Kansas which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It included 58 contributing buildings. [1] It includes Classical Revival, Italianate, and Queen Anne architecture. [2]

R. H. White was founded in 1853 as a peddler by Ralph Huntington White on the railroad between Chester and Pittsfield. Originally on Winter Street in 1862, it moved in 1876 to a large ornate six-floor building (designed by Peabody and Stearns and built by McNeil Brothers) at 518–536 Washington Street, in the downtown shopping area. [1] [2]
William Allen White and his wife Sallie purchased the unfinished shell in 1899 and finished the interior. The upper floors of the house were gutted by a fire in 1920, and rebuilt to a plan by the Kansas City architects Wight & Wight. The Mother's House was built in 1903 or 1904, and was occupied by White's mother Mary until her death in 1924.
The largest, Central Riverside Park, spans 58 acres (23 ha) on the west bank of the Little Arkansas River and hosts an open air bandstand, playground, and interactive water fountain as well as outdoor art sculptures and historic structures. It is also home to the city's Spanish-American Memorial and a small zoo, the Kansas Wildlife Exhibit. [17]
