Vieques was formally annexed to Puerto Rico in 1854. In 1816, Vieques was briefly visited by Simón Bolívar when his ship ran aground there while fleeing defeat in Venezuela. [10] During the second part of the 19th century, thousands of slaves of African descent were brought to Vieques to work the sugarcane plantations.
