In the early 20th century, Duke Simone Vincenzo Velluti Zati di San Clemente was responsible for building an oil mill and grain store and beginning to produce wine in its vineyards. [2] A chapel was added in 1958. [1] The estate was purchased by Sting and his wife Trudie Styler in 1999. [2]
The resort is situated on 573 acres (0.895 sq mi) and includes a golf course (the Birdwood Golf Course), 26 tennis courts, and a spa and fitness center. [1] [2] The hotel was built in 1962 and 1963 based on a design by architects Johnson, Craven & Gibson.
