Ogden Dunes is a town in Portage Township, Porter County, Indiana, United States. [2] It is located on the shore of Lake Michigan, within Indiana Dunes National Park and nearly surrounded by the city of Portage .
It was not until 1830 when Chiqua's town and Tassinong appear on maps and in records. [11] Chiqua's town is a mile east of Valparaiso on State Route 2, the old Sauk Trail . City West was a community of 15-20 households platted at the mouth of Fort Creek, in the present-day Indiana Dunes State Park. Founded and platted in 1836, it collapsed in the aftermath of the panic of 1837, and was fully abandoned by 1839. The remaining buildings were destroyed by fire in 1854.
The town's location along the railroad helped industry to grow. Soon, there was a cooperage, sawmills, a washing machine factory, and an organ company. Among the better examples of the towns growth are the commercial building on the southwest corner of Broadway and Calumet Rd, and the old Chesterton Tribune Building.
Narrower than anticipated, the new concrete highway was still superior to most Indiana roads, which in the mid-1920s were gravel or dirt with paved sections only between the larger towns. Dunes Highway construction began in 1922 under the guidance of Gary contractor Ingwald Moe and construction engineer Ezra Sensibar. [15] [19]
Indiana Dunes National Park is a national park of the United States located in northwestern Indiana managed by the National Park Service. It was authorized by Congress in 1966 as the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and was redesignated as the nation's 61st national park on February 15, 2019. [ 2 ]
Passengers can board the train at the Portage/Ogden Dunes Station, which is located immediately east of Ogden Dunes in Portage. Portage is intersected by several major highways, including Interstate 94 and Interstates 80 / 90 ( Indiana Toll Road ) as well as U.S. Route 6 , U.S. Route 12 , U.S. Route 20 , and Indiana 149 and Indiana 249 .
