Winterhalter not only painted the official portraits of the British royal house but also dedicated himself to producing private images, as is the case with this work that was commissioned as a surprise gift from Queen Victoria to her husband Prince Albert on the occasion of his twenty-fourth birthday. Portrait of Prince Albert is an 1859 portrait painting by the German artist Franz Xaver Winterhalter depicting Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the husband of Queen Victoria and Prince Consort of the United Kingdom. [1] [2] It was the last of several portraits Winterhalter painted of Albert before the prince's death in 1860.
