The serial number on the butt of my Model 49 Bodyguard just doesn't match up with the way everybody has them listed. I am in hopes that someone on the forum, somewhere can help me get it dated. So here goes, the serial number is 9J7XXX. Thats it, sum total. It has a pinned barrel and it has a "dash" between the MOD and 49.
Sadly I let my blued circa 1974 S&W M-38 and stainless steel circa 1987 M-649 slip away. The only member of the club en mi casa now is the Spousal Unit's "Clone". A Spectrum Blue Total Titanium Taurus M-851, all Foo-Fooed up in gold & pearl. After 2,000+ rounds of 158 gr. LSWC's it still looks and shoots like new...

So in 2000 I was a brand new officer. I was carrying the Sig Sauer 220 in 45 ACP, but I needed a backup piece. I had (still have it actually) a Colt Detective Special, but it was a little bulky to carry under my shirt attached to my vest. I heard about a S&W Model 49 Bodyguard that was for sale.

Have to get to the range to see how they handle with live ammo. Genuine vintage grips. Fairly certain the grips were made in the seventies and my Model 49 was manufactured in 73. They go ...
Pics of S&W Model 49 that we have Hello All, Such great responses from you! Thank you so very much as said previously, no one would help me. I thank you so much for all your in put. As requested, I am attaching pictures since now there is a question regarding serial numbers.
Left the Conway Arkansas gun show with this. $775 individual sale. Probably paid top much for it but all pre lock Smith’s in good condition were comparatively priced. Looks brand new. Locks up tight. No box, no papers, no original grips, really clean. Pachmayr grips. Model 49 no dash. Matching numbers. S/N 1J43***. Any ideas on build date?
oh! and welcome to the forum! i would probably have to say the 442 would be a close second choice, or even a 438. i give the nod to the 340pd because of the unbelieveably light weight, and the unquestionable horsepower of the 357. 340pds pop up used (usually very lightly used, for obvious reasons!) for 500-600 bucks, so that narrows the price difference with the 38s a little.
