Posted March 2, 2015. Peter Sinks are a series of three "sinks" or depressions without an outlet (referred to as dolines geologically) located in the Bear River Range of northern Utah between Logan and Bear Lake. They are known as one of the coldest spots in the lower 48 with a record low of -69 recorded in Feb 1985 (one degree shy of Lower 48 ...
Peter Sinks can still post some 60-ish degree diurnal swings in summer too. It has to do with the winds going calm allowing for a decoupling between the sink bottom and the rim. This decoupling can produce a 30-40 degree temp gradient over about a 300' elevation change.

Too bad that there was no weather station at Peter Sinks then. If nearby Randolf really did reach -65F, Peters Sink must have been off the charts! No doubt that the January 1888 cold wave was a historic event, but the -65 at Fort Keough just seems suspect to me.
December 1955: -15. January 1956: -25. February 1956: -31. Other than the -70 reading supposedly recorded at Rogers Pass, the other low readings at Rogers Pass are fairly comparable to those of Helena. Other than the -70 reading, Rogers Pass isn't that cold of a location, especially by Montana standards.
