    Keep the elements out and tollerate the heat. On the stove I used last year I ran the vent pipe up about 6 feet with a dampner then out the side of the building and straight up above the peak about a foot. The new stove will be more toward the center of the building and so the vent will need to go straight up and through the roof.

    The barrel holds X amount of air, as the chimney draws the flue gases etc. out, the air will be replenished through the air intake in the door. That's how it suppose to work. Also another thing I found useful is I laid some sand in the bottom of the barrel, enough so it was about 9" wide at the bottom.

    If you want to build a safe barrel stove start by building a barrel out of atleast 3/16th plate with the proper reinforcement. Otherwise they are unsafe in my opinion.
