Everyone else, including new Soldiers are getting the @usa.army.mil email and the @mail.mil email is no more. That also means good luck editing basic Microsoft Office products without the appropriate @army.mil license. You can use Zoho writer and save the document as a Word file if you need to write anything.
Biggest culprits from your errors - outdated DOD certificates installed on your machine, and choosing the wrong certificate. For some reason, I can only access my e-mail if I choose the NOT e-mail certificate. Also, once you get into it, you can set up a rule that will forward every email you get to a separate account.
Just to clear this up for future readers. Everyone is getting moved from CVR Teams to Office 365. CVR sunsets on 15 June. But, Enterprise Email services will continue as normal until October(ish). All Enterprise email traffic (your "@mail.mil") will be auto forwarded to your new O365 email domain ("@army.mil") at that time.
As long as there is no PII in the email or attachment (specifically, a social security #), give them a civilian email address, like a gmail account. They shouldn't be able to send it encrypted to a civilian email, because there are no certificates on the civilian email for their certificate to link to for the encryption.
Okay so story time SPC. Back when I was an old E4 YEARS ago I had this same issue happen to me. I went years im talking years without having a military email. (Tbh it was great the ultimate sham excuse). However it gets old because you actually do need that email for certain things especially to keep ya in the loop of things.
What just worked for me was calling the Army help desk. 866-335-2769. He said on firefox, click menu, settings, privacy and security, clear history. A365 (army.mil) SMIME is broken. Period. Known issue with no ETA on a fix. OWA (mail.mil) SMIME still works using internet explorer and tweaking your advanced settings. Considering you mention entering a domain in the extension, I’m guessing you’re on A365 which means no bueno.
The problem is that now outlook thinks I have an @usa.army.mil account (I also recently had to renew my CAC) and my mail.mil account apparently no longer exists according to my S6, I can’t sign into my email and I think this problem is the reason I suddenly lost the ability to digitally sign anything when I got my new CAC
The army didn’t coordinate enough licenses with Microsoft when they initially fielded the @army.mil addresses. Agreed try webmail with your @army.mil and if that doesn’t work try the Google work space site with the @usa.army.mil. You can also contact the AESD help desk that should be able to get OP a solution.
