The English Football League (EFL) is a league of professional football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888 as the Football League, it is the oldest football league in the world, and was the top-level football league in England from its foundation until 1992, when the top 22 clubs split from it to form the Premier League.
The 2022–23 EFL Championship (referred to as the Sky Bet Championship for sponsorship reasons) was the 7th season of the EFL Championship under its current title and the 31st season under its current league division format. The season started on 29 July 2022 and ended on 8 May 2023.
Aleksandar Mitrović won The Golden Boot this season, breaking the record for the most goals scored in a Championship season, with 43 goals. Mitrović also scored the most hat–tricks in the league, with three to his name, helping his club Fulham to the league title and an immediate Premier League return.
The EFL is contested through three divisions. The divisions are the Championship, League One and League Two. The winner of the Championship, Newcastle United, and runner-up Brighton & Hove Albion were automatically promoted to the Premier League and they were joined by the winner of the Championship playoff, Huddersfield Town.
