Sakamoto was born in Tokyo in 1970. As a child, he was an avid fan of early tokusatsu shows, which led him to take an interest in martial arts. In 1979, he saw the Jackie Chan film Drunken Master, which led him to take a particular interest in kung fu and gymnastics, though he did not get to learn kung fu until he was older.
