The Catholic Church in Ireland, or Irish Catholic Church, is part of the worldwide Catholic Church in communion with the Holy See. With 3.5 million members (in the Republic of Ireland), it is the largest Christian church in Ireland. In the Republic of Ireland's 2022 census, 69% of the population identified as Roman Catholic. [2]
The Tridentine Mass, [1] also known as the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite [2] or usus antiquior (more ancient usage), or the Traditional Latin Mass [3] [4] or the Traditional Rite [5] is the liturgy in the Roman Missal of the Catholic Church codified in 1570 and published thereafter with amendments up to 1962.
Despite the Tridentine Mass being supplanted by a new form of the Roman Rite Mass, some communities continued celebrating pre-conciliar rites or adopted them later. This includes priestly societies and religious institutes which use some pre-1970 edition of the Roman Missal or of a similar missal in communion with the Holy See.
Since 15 September 2007 it has been the home of the Dublin Latin Mass Chaplaincy. [4] As a result, it is the only location in Dublin where the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite (or Traditional Latin Mass) is licitly celebrated (as opposed to the valid but illicit celebration by the Society of Saint Pius X).

The Latin Mass Society of Ireland (LMSI), founded in 1999, is a Roman Catholic society based in Ireland that is dedicated to the preservation of the Tridentine Mass as one of the forms of the Church's liturgy and to making it more widely available. The Society is composed predominantly of lay members and is headed by Nick Lowry.
In this sense of the word "rite", the list of rites within the Catholic Church is identical with that of the autonomous churches, each of which has its own heritage, which distinguishes that church from others, and membership of a church involves participation in its liturgical, theological, spiritual and disciplinary heritage.
