In the mid-1950s the Barnabite fathers had been invited to the Diocese of Buffalo to teach in Catholic Schools. Arriving from Italy they were studying English in Buffalo and Niagara Falls. They were seeking a place of their own to build a Seminary to house candidates for the priesthood.
It was a wood structure on the same site as the present cathedral. On November 12, 1831, Bishop Alexander Macdonell of Kingston blessed and opened this church which was the first Roman Catholic Parish church to be built in the Niagara Peninsula. This first Catholic Church was burned down by an arsonist on August 23, 1842.

The St. Francis Xavier complex consists of a Lombard-Romanesque Revival basilica style church (1911–1913), a Queen Anne style rectory (1895), and a school completed over three phases in 1895, 1906, and 1956. The church measures 156 by 67 feet (48 by 20 m) and is two and one-half stories high with a low-pitched red clay tile roof.
