The Dancing Girl of Izu (伊豆の踊子, Izu no odoriko) is a 1954 black-and-white Japanese film directed by Yoshitaro Nomura. The film is based on Yasunari Kawabata's 1926 short story The Dancing Girl of Izu. A previous adaptation of the same title had been directed by Heinosuke Gosho in 1933.
The Izu islands stretch south-east from the Izu Peninsula on Honshu and cover an area of approximately 301.56 km 2 (116.43 sq mi). There are nine populated islands with a total population of 24,645 people (as of 2009 [update] ) spread over 296.56 km 2 (114.50 sq mi).
The Dancing Girl of Izu is not only the first, but, according to Gosho biographer Arthur Nolletti, also regarded the best of the many adaptations of Kawabata's story, and an important example of films connected to the junbungaku ("pure literature") movement, which favoured "serious" literature in opposition to "popular" literature.
