Harold Washington Library-State/Van Buren, (formerly Library-State/Van Buren, formerly State/Van Buren), is an 'L' station serving the CTA's Brown, Orange, Pink, and Purple Lines. Originally, the station was to have direct access to the second floor of the Harold Washington Library building, but this direct connection was never built.
In 1991, the Harold Washington Library Center, became Chicago's new central library. It is named for the late mayor Harold Washington. It was the world's largest municipal public library at the time of its opening.
Originally the main library of the Chicago Public Library, the building was converted in 1978 to an arts and culture center at the instigation of Commissioner of Cultural Affairs Lois Weisberg. The city's central library is now located across the Loop in the spacious, postmodern-style Harold Washington Library Center, which opened in 1991.
