An 1800 map shows a 'Redfoot River' in the area near the Lake, a possible misspelling of the name from Henry Rutherford's 1785 survey. From Low's Encyclopaedia. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km 2), all land.
