It began on 20 November 1974 in Chicago, ended on 22 May 1975 in Besançon, France, and promoted their 1974 album of the same name. The Selling England by the Pound Tour was a concert tour by the English rock band Genesis, to promote their album Selling England by the Pound.The tour began in September 1973 in the United Kingdom, and ended in May 1974 in the United States.
From then to 1974, Genesis released a studio album around once a year. After several line-up changes, the band stabilised in 1971 after drummer Phil Collins and guitarist Steve Hackett joined Gabriel, Banks and Rutherford.
Released by Charisma in the UK in February 1974, "I Know What I Like" was the band's only pop hit of their early years. At a time when progressive rock bands largely avoided the singles market, Genesis were openly fond of the pop song format, and even wrote two songs ("Happy the Man" and the unreleased "Wooden Mask") specifically with the intent of their being non-album singles.
Discs one and two contain the first official live release of a full concert from the band's 1974–1975 tour of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (1974). It was recorded on 24 January 1975 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, and the only one of the tour's 102 dates to be recorded in multi-track.
