America, Why I Love Her is an album of poetry recited by John Wayne. It was released on the RCA Victor label (LSP-4828) on March 1, 1973. It consists of patriotic poems written by actor John Mitchum, the brother of Robert Mitchum.
John Wayne read the poem "from an unspecified source" on December 29, 1977, at the memorial service for film director Howard Hawks. [11] After hearing John Wayne's reading, script writer John Carpenter featured the poem in the 1979 television film Better Late Than Never. [1]: 426 [12] [13]
During filming, John Mitchum, brother of Robert, introduced John Wayne to his patriotic poetry. Seeing that Wayne was greatly moved by Mitchum's words, Forrest Tucker suggested Mitchum and Wayne should collaborate to record some of the poetry, which eventually resulted in the Grammy-nominated spoken-word album, America, Why I Love Her (1973).
