Following is a list of spinal nerves and points that are characteristically belonging to the dermatome of each nerve: [4] Dermatomes of the lower limb (modified, from Fender, after Foerster) C2 – At least one cm lateral to the occipital protuberance at the base of the skull. Alternately, a point at least 3 cm (1.2 in) behind the ear.
An area innervated by a single dorsal root is called a dermatome. Neurologists rely on maps of dermatomes and peripheral nerve fields to diagnose areas of nerve damage based on somasthetic or proprioceptive deficits in specific dermatomes and peripheral nerve fields.
File:Dermatomes and cutaneous nerves - anterior.svg is a vector version of this file. It should be used in place of this PNG file when not inferior.

Posterior Dermatomes. The axial line is the line between two adjacent dermatomes that are not represented by immediately adjacent spinal levels. Although dermatomes are shown to be discrete segments on dermatomal maps (like in the image opposite), they are in fact not; adjacent dermatomes overlap with one another.
In human anatomy, cutaneous nerves are primarily responsible for providing cutaneous innervation, sensory innervation to the skin.In addition to sympathetic and autonomic afferent (sensory) fibers, most cutaneous nerves also contain sympathetic efferent (visceromotor) fibers, which innervate cutaneous blood vessels, sweat glands, and the arrector pilli muscles of hair follicles. Such images are liable to produce inferior results when scaled to different sizes (as well as possibly being very inefficient in file size). If appropriate to do so, they should be replaced with images created using vector graphics .
