Ocean Bay Park is a hamlet in the town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County, New York, United States. It is located on Fire Island, a barrier island separated from the southern side of Long Island by the Great South Bay. To reach Ocean Bay Park, one must take a ferry or water taxi from Bay Shore. Housing includes group houses and family homes.
Point O' Woods is located within the Town of Brookhaven, between Ocean Bay Park and Oakleyville. The hamlet is separated from its nearest western neighbor, Ocean Bay Park, by a six-foot chain-link barrier known simply as "the Fence". The Sunken Forest, a park situated below mean high tide level serves as a natural barrier to the east.
Cherry Grove dates its modern history to the 1868 purchase by Archer and Elizabeth Perkinson. They bought the land between Lone Hill (now Fire Island Pines) and the Cherry Grove Hotel from the ocean to the bay for 25 cents per acre and named the area for the black-cherry trees in the area. [3]
Fears built the original yacht club. Part of the construction was a cinder block hotel which still stands today. She invested $10,000 and bought an inlet on Great South Bay. In 1959, she paid off the last of her debt on her property. It was then valued at $350,000. [14]
The park, 6.5 miles (10.5 km) in length, [1] is renowned for its beaches (which, excepting the beach on Zachs Bay, [8] [9] face the open Atlantic Ocean) and furnishes one of the most popular summer recreational locations for the New York metropolitan area.
Ocean Park Branch library, an original Carnegie library. In December 1916, the commissioners of Santa Monica selected the site for the Ocean Park branch Carnegie library at 2601 Main Street. [2] The library was funded by a $12,500 grant from the Carnegie Corporation. The library was completed on February 15, 1918 when it was opened to the public.
