Mexia (/ məˈheɪə / ⓘ mə-HAY-ə) [4] is a city in Limestone County, Texas, United States. The population was 6,893 at the 2020 census. The city's motto, based on the fact that outsiders tend to mispronounce the name as / ˈmɛksiə / (MEK-see-ə), is "A great place to live, no matter how you pronounce it." [5]
It is approximately 40 miles east of Waco and about 1 1/2 hours south of the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex. Named after General José Antonio Mexía, a Hispanic hero for the Republic of Texas Army during the Texas Revolution, the town was founded near his estate, whose ownership dates to 1833.

History. Town Named for Gen. Jose Antonio Mexia. Military officer and promoter of Texas colonization. Served as secretary of Mexican legation to United States, 1829-1831. Led victorious Mexia Expedition to expel centralists in Matamoros, 1832.
Mexia was born in 1800 in Jalapa, and his rather short life was ended in 1839 by a Mexican firing squad. He was a close friend of Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin and other Texas revolutionists.
