During the Vietnam War Lai Khê was a garrison town as the ARVN 5th Division was based there for most of the 1960s/70s. I Corps (Vietnamese: Quân đoàn I) was a corps of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN), the army of the nation state of South Vietnam that existed from 1955 to 1975. It was one of four corps of the ARVN. This was the northernmost region of South Vietnam, bordering North Vietnam at the Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
The principal sub-units of the division were the 7th, 8th and 9th Infantry Regiments and the 1st Armored Cavalry Regiment. The 9th Infantry Regiment (Divine Elephant) was based at Quan Loi near An Lộc. The 1st ACR was based at the division's forward base camp at Lai Khe.

Gela was constructed in 1969 by the 1st Infantry Division approximately 17 km northwest of Lai Khê. [1]The base was assaulted by units of the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) 7th Infantry Division on the morning of 13 May 1969, the assault was repulsed for the loss of three U.S. and an estimated 39 PAVN soldiers killed.
