NV3500 Gear ratios. Jump to Latest ... Blazer 4x4 2dr with the original NV3500 and the crappy 4.02 1st ...
Currently running an NV3500 with a 355 and 3.73 rear end on a single cab 95 c1500. Found a good deal locally on a T56 trans. Fairly easy swap with a couple modifications. The NV3500 gear ratios are tall and obviously built for a work truck not a sport truck.
I'm pretty sure the NV3500 will work for me (posted an earlier post regarding a problem I was having) but was just wondering about the gear ratios. I've located a '98 NV3500 5 speed out of a '98 Chevy 1500 4x4 with the wide set of gears.
Full size NV3500 has different gear ratios which will make 1st gear totally useless. I'd look for a newer one. Those early ones, if it even is an NV3500, had shifter issues. Shifter could be in the wrong place also.
The GM NV3500 comes in two gear ratios. The close gear ratio is designated for smaller GM trucks like the S10 that have a first gear ratio of 3.49. Close ratios have a GM RPO code M50. The wide ratio can be found in GM full size light trucks with a 4.02 first. The GM RPO code for the wide ratio is MG5.
And the 94 4.3 transmissions are NV3500, not a T5. Also, it could be a 1-shaft or 2-shaft (shift shaft). The 1-shaft design is newer and replaced the 2-shaft sometime in 93-94. Here are some possible gear ratios. NV3500 3.490 2.160 1.400 1.000 0.780 NV3500 4.016 2.318 1.401 1.000 0.729 Reverse will be around 3.55
Comparing the (100% factory 3.42 ratio) 87 5.7tbi with 700r4 to the (100% factory 3.42 same tire size) 96 5.0tbi with nv3500. The Nv3500 is a much more fun truck to drive. The 87 w 700 and 3.42 gearing made the thing into a pig. A 5.7,nv3500, 3.73, and 235 tires is a nice balance that will let you have some fun while keeping everything happy.
I have a 2003 4.3 4x4 extended cab s10 that currently has the 4l60/e. I dislike the transmission because of the gear ratios and I enjoy driving manual vehicles. What is the best year transmission to get/gears to have swapped in? I’ve heard about some people having a useless first gear and I don’t want that.
