Amerigo Vespucci (/ v ɛ ˈ s p uː tʃ i / vesp-OO-chee, [1] Italian: [ameˈriːɡo veˈsputtʃi]; 9 March 1454 – 22 February 1512) was an Italian explorer and navigator from the Republic of Florence for whom "America" is named.

The design for Amerigo Vespucci was prepared by the naval engineer Carlo Vigna, who also designed the similar corvette Flavio Gioia. [1] The Italian navy still largely relied on a fleet of old wooden-hulled cruising ships built in the 1850s and 1860s, but by the 1870s, the world's navies had begun to move to steel construction.
