ADMIN MOD. Car max tried to low-ball me. Received online offer of $10k through the app for my 2020 Hyundai Elantra with 80k miles. I drove 3 hours to the nearest location, they then gave me a written offer of $8500, claiming nicks and scrapes that were already disclosed previously. I went to Hyundai, the next store over and was written a 10k check.
Carmax is a ripoff and charges more than you’d pay for new cars with low mileage (I.e. Corolla/Civic 1-2 years old with 10-20k miles is usually at or more expensive than what you could negotiate down on a brand new car at a dealer). There are also plenty of stories of people getting flooded/ex rental/etc. cars.
The process was easy and simple. Prior to the OMNI roll out, a car with warranty would be $355 per car. On top of that, you would also get paid if a customer sold their car to Carmax, 50 bucks. Just to break down the pay, if you only sold 20 units with warranty, you would gross $7100 just on units alone.
Write everything down (no matter how small) and ask that each item be listed in the service invoice. I made this mistake, and CarMax completely forgot to replace the low batteries on my keys. So I had to go back, which was annoying. I hope this was somewhat helpful for anyone who is thinking of purchasing from CarMax.
Reply reply More replies. hammst920. •. Yes you will have to title and register the vehicle in your home state. That means paying all the dmv fees and sales tax out if pocket. Also carmax's return policy can only be fulfilled at the store you purchased it from. I would recommend just transferring it.

I just sold my GTI (with an aftermarket downpipe causing a check engine light) to CarMax for $5k over what any other car buying service was going to give. They're great in my book. I also got the online appraisal and thought, "oh yeah, no way." And they gave me that exact price, no questions asked. Reply reply.
Ask for the Location General Manager at your store, explain your issues, and ask for your money back, its that simple. Partner with a sales manager in store do not call the CEC. Explain the situation calmly and usually it is not an issue if there is a legitimate reason like what you have explained.
