Gerard Sekoto OIG [1] (9 December 1913 – 20 March 1993), was a South African artist and musician. He is recognised as a pioneer of urban black art and social realism . His work was exhibited in Paris , Stockholm , Venice , Washington , and Senegal , as well as in South Africa.

During the 18th century, the Ndzundza Ndebele people of South Africa created their tradition and style of house painting. Until the late 1900s, the Ndebele noted warriors and large landowners. In the autumn of 1883, they went to war with the neighboring Boers. The loss of the war brought on a harsh life and horrible punishments for the Ndebele.
Willie Bester (born February 29, 1956) [1] is a South African painter, sculptor and collage artist. He is best known for his role in the protesting of the apartheid system through his artwork. He currently lives in Kuilsrivier , South Africa with his wife, Evelyn [ 2 ] and their three children.
Claerhout had no formal art training but came from an artistic family, and had belonged to a local art society during his student years. Claerhout has been defined as an expressionist painter and his work referenced Flemish Expressionism especially the works of Constant Permeke, whose paintings, like Claerhout's, were concerned with agricultural labourers and the land they tend.

[4] A Master of Arts thesis by Karin Skawran [5] concerning the graphic works of Hans Anton Aschenborn was published in the South African art and culture periodical, Lantern in 1965. [6])
