Announced on September 30, 2016, the 2017 event was the 30th Royal Rumble and was scheduled to be held on January 29, 2017, at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, marking the second Royal Rumble to be held at this venue after the 1997 event, and the fourth to be held in the state of Texas, after the 1989, 1997, and 2007 events.
The Royal Rumble match traditionally involves 30 wrestlers and usually lasts an hour (the 2011 edition had a 40-man field). The 2025 installment of the match was the longest, lasting one hour and 20 minutes while the first televised Rumble match in 1988 involved only 20 men [ 7 ] and lasted 33 minutes of the two-hour broadcast. The Royal Rumble match was created by wrestler and WWE Hall of Famer Pat Patterson and the event was established by the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE). After the match was first tested at a house show in October 1987, [1] the first Royal Rumble event took place on January 24, 1988, and was broadcast live as a television special on the USA Network.
