Quảng Trị is a coastal province near the southernmost part of the North Central Coast region, the Central of Vietnam. It borders Quảng Bình to the north, Huế to the south, Savannakhet of Laos to the west and the South China Sea to the east, with 75 kilometres (47 mi) of coast.
A major feature of the town is the Quảng Trị Citadel, built in 1824, as a military bastion during the 4th year of the reign of Minh Mạng. It is an example of Vauban architecture and it later became the administrative head office of the Nguyễn dynasty in Quảng Trị Province (1809–1945). [1]

In the 1990s, the People's Committee of Quảng Trị province restored the citadel as a historical site. Some sections of the city walls were restored and the four main gates were rebuilt. A memorial was erected in the center of the citadel commemorating "the 81 days and nights of 1972". [7] Currently, it is the largest park in Quang Tri Town.
