John Sutton Hall was constructed between 1873 and 1875 to house the Indiana Normal School, a school to train women to become teachers. The building was designed by James W. Drum, who also designed the 1869 Indiana County Courthouse, the Jefferson County Courthouse, and the St. Bernard's Roman Catholic Church in Indiana.
