U.S. Route 221 Alternate (US 221A) is a 26.2-mile (42.2 km) alternate route that travels from Chesnee, South Carolina to Rutherfordton, North Carolina, via State Line, South Carolina, Cliffside, North Carolina, Henrietta, North Carolina, Caroleen, North Carolina, Alexander Mills, North Carolina, Forest City, North Carolina, and Spindale, North Carolina.
The road was first mapped as an under construction highway from US 25 near Hendersonville north to NC 280 (current NC 146). The first segment opened in 1966 beginning at NC 280 to the US 25 connector near East Flat Rock. In 1969, I-26 was extended north to I-40, and the South Carolina segment was extended to NC 108 near Columbus.
The second NC 741 was established in 1935 as a new primary routing between the South Carolina state line, through Harris, to US 74/US 221/NC 181, in Rutherfordton. [10] In 1941, NC 741 was decommissioned and replaced mostly by US 221, with Jack McKinney Road, between the state line to Harris, as secondary road.
