Won't work inside style elements, only for HTML attributes. Setting bgcolor for the table is mostly mute, since only the cells show. Since this template is routinely called at level 2 (L2) by a convenience wrapper template, no paramaeters will be undefined at L2 (except by accident).
Because the setup for calling the template can become large, an example is provided, which you can copy/paste/edit for actual use. The example produces the puzzle show on the Sudoku main page, with some colors added to demonstrate color usage.
