Although in many variations scoreless hands (推倒胡 tui dao hu in Mandarin, 雞糊 gai wu in Cantonese) are possible, many require that hands be of some point value in order to win the round. While the basic gameplay is more or less the same throughout mahjong, the most significant divergence between variations lies in the scoring systems.
The dealer draws a winning hand at the beginning of the game. 地糊 Earthly hand A player completes a winning hand with the dealer's first discard (in most variants, provided the dealer does not draw a kong). 十三么 Thirteen orphans 1 and 9 of each suit, one of each wind, one of each dragon, and one extra piece of any of those thirteen elements
In order to win a player needs to have a legal hand which scores the minimum or higher hand-points that players agree on before play (3 hand-points, 6 hand-points, 7 hand-points, etc.) Unlike many other mahjong variations, only the winner scores and the other players take no points regardless of the content of their hands.
