Northford was originally part of the New Haven Colony in the 17th century, and was settled in the early 18th century as part of Branford. It became part of North Branford when that town was incorporated in 1831. It was at first a rural outpost of Branford, which was granted a separate Congregational parish in 1745.
The creation of the Red Caboose Motel began with the incorporation of "Red Caboose Lodge, Inc." [a] by Donald M. Denlinger on January 9, 1967. The only building on the south side of Foxon Road included in the district is the c. 1870 North Branford Hall, built as a school and now housing town offices. All of the buildings in the district are of wood frame construction, except for the Atwater Memorial Library, a brick Colonial Revival structure built in 1943 and enlarged in 1967.
