A covered bridge is a timber-truss bridge with a roof, decking, and siding, which in most covered bridges create an almost complete enclosure. [1] The purpose of the covering is to protect the wooden structural members from the weather.
This 86.5-foot-long (26.4 m), 18.66-foot-wide (5.69 m), Howe truss bridge was built in 1855. It was renovated by the Works Progress Administration in 1939, and by the city of Philadelphia in 2000. The Buttonwood bridge is also the shortest at 63 feet 6 inches (19.35 m), while the Hillsgrove Covered Bridge in Sullivan County is longest at 171 feet (52 m). On July 2, 1973, the Hillsgrove bridge was the first of the seven to be added to the NRHP, and it was the only one so listed before the Thematic Resources submission. [2]
