Dasa, born in 15th century Odisha under Gajapati emperor Kapilendra Deva, was acclaimed as the "Adikabi" or first poet. The reign of the Gajapatis is considered to be the golden period for Odisha art and literature. Kapilendra Deva patronized Odia language and literature along with Sanskrit, unlike his predecessors who used only Sanskrit.
Odia children's literature' has a long history. Its roots are in Moukhika Sishu Sahitya, which is a part of the Loka Sahitya meant for children.
