Christian Brothers High School moved to a separate campus on Walnut Grove Road in Memphis and began to operate under a separate charter. Maurelian (George Valin Sheel), a LaSallian Christian Brother, founder and president of Christian Brothers College (later known as Christian Brothers University (Memphis, Tennessee) and Christian Brothers High School (Memphis, Tennessee)) began the band and orchestra in 1872 and served as the first band director from 1872-82.
Phil graduated from Memphis' Christian Brothers High School, where he played for his uncle and was a teammate and schoolmate of Tim McCarver. Gagliano and McCarver, as fellow Cardinals from 1963 through 1969, became two of the four Christian Brothers High School baseball alumni to have played in the World Series as of 2017.
Christian Brothers University is located on a 75-acre (300,000 m 2) wooded campus in the heart of Midtown, Memphis, four miles (6 km) east of Downtown. It is across from the Memphis Fairgrounds, home of the Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, and diagonally positioned from the Cooper-Young Neighborhood.
