Masonite, also called Quartboard or pressboard, [2] is a type of engineered wood made of steam-cooked and pressure-molded wood or paper fibers. The fibers form a stiff, dense material in a range of weights. [3] The process was formulated and patented by American inventor William H. Mason. [4]
Wood-plastic composite. Wood–plastic composites (WPCs) are composite materials made of wood fiber/wood flour and thermoplastic(s) such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), or polylactic acid (PLA). In addition to wood fiber and plastic, WPCs can also contain other ligno-cellulosic and/or inorganic filler materials.
Composite lumber comes from the manufacturer as a finished product. There is no need to stain, sand, or paint the material. Composite materials usually cost more than lumber, but their long life and low-maintenance requirements could make them more economical in the long run.
Even with a wood grain design, plastic lumber is still easy to distinguish visually from natural timber: the grains are the same uniform color as the rest of the material. Manufacturers claim plastic lumber is more environmentally-friendly and requires less maintenance than wood/plastic composites or rot-resistant wood. [2]

Hardboard is similar to particle board and medium-density fiberboard, but is denser, stronger and harder because it is made out of exploded wood fibers that have been highly compressed. [ 3 ] The density of hardboard is higher than 500 kg/m 3 (31 lb/cu ft), [ 4 ] usually about 800–1,040 kg/m 3 (50–65 lb/cu ft). [ 5 ]
