The Reading Terminal (/ ˈ r ɛ d ɪ ŋ / RED-ing) is a complex of buildings that includes the former Reading Company main station located in the Market East section of Center City in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. It comprises the Reading Terminal Headhouse, Trainshed, and Market.
By 1871, the Reading was the largest company in the world with $170,000,000 in market capitalization (equal to $4,323,666,667 today). [4] It may have been the first conglomerate in the world. In 1879, the Reading gained control of the North Pennsylvania Railroad, which provided access to the burgeoning steel industry in the Lehigh Valley. [3]
