Sondrestrom Air Base, originally Bluie West-8, was a United States Air Force base in central Greenland. The site is located 60 mi (97 km) north of the Arctic Circle and 90 mi (140 km) from the northeast end of Kangerlussuaq Fjord (formerly known by its Danish name Søndre Strømfjord ).
The airfield code-named Bluie West One became the best-known World War II military base on Greenland. Bluie was the United States military code name for Greenland during World War II.
Other important bases in Greenland were Bluie West Eight near the present-day town of Kangerlussuaq, and Bluie East One on the almost-uninhabited east coast. [citation needed] Bad weather is frequent in Southern Greenland, and Narsarsuaq is virtually surrounded by high mountains, making the approach to the steel-mat runway exceedingly difficult.
Ikateq means "shallow water". "Bluie West" and "Bluie East" were wartime code-names adopted for the two strings of planned radio stations in Greenland by the USAAC in 1941. BE-2 was frequently referred to as Optimist, perhaps due to the urgent anticipation preceding its discovery. Air Transport Command called the field Curio in coded traffic.
After 1942, the proper name was Grønnedal (Danish), or Green Valley (English), but the base was also called Grondal ("groan dale") by Americans. Bluie was the military code name for Greenland. Narsarsuaq (lit.Great Plain; [2] old spelling: Narssarssuaq) is a settlement in the Kujalleq municipality in southern Greenland.It had 123 inhabitants in 2020. [3] There is a thriving tourism industry in and around Narsarsuaq, whose attractions include a great diversity of wildlife, gemstones, tours to glaciers, and an airfield museum.
