The Botanic Garden of Tirana, which is part of the University of Tirana, has become institutionalised with international links with Canadian, Hungarian, Chinese and Romanian gardens. [ 1 ] The garden contains around 2,000 species of plants and is maintained by horticultural experts and scientists who also use the gardens for study purposes. [ 1 ]
Now it is the official residence of the President of Albania. The Park was also home of the memorial to the mother of King Zog of Albania, Sadijé Toptani. The monument was destroyed by the communist regime in the 1950s and can now be enjoyed only in pictures. [2] A wall has been built demarcating the park's boundary.
As of 2021, there are four sites in Albania inscribed on the list and further four sites on the tentative list. [4] The first site in Albania to be added to the list was the ancient city of Butrint which was inscribed at the 16th UNESCO session in 1992. [5] The historic centre of Gjirokastër was inscribed in 2005 as Museum-City of Gjirokastra. [6]
Albania's rich flora would be represented in the gardens around the square, while the former garden behind Skanderbeg's monument would be restored to the pre-2010 state and named Europe Park. Construction works started in 2016 with the finishing of the small ring road around the square.
