Although Bambara is the lingua franca of Mali, today the large majority of Timbuktu's inhabitants speaks Koyra Chiini, a Songhay language that also functions as the lingua franca. Before the 1990–1994 Tuareg rebellion , both Hassaniya Arabic and Tamashek were represented by 10% each to an 80% dominance of the Koyra Chiini language.
