The Ferrari Dino engine is a line of mechanically similar V6 and V8 engines produced by Ferrari for about 40 years from the late 1950s into the early 2000s. The idea for the engine came from Alfredo "Dino" Ferrari, who was the son of Enzo Ferrari. Dino suggested to Enzo Ferrari the development of a V6 engine for F2 at the end of 1955.
In January 1978, a stolen 1974 Dino 246 GTS was discovered buried in a yard in Los Angeles, gathering extensive national media attention, although the origins and fate of the car remained a mystery for some time. The car was eventually revealed to have been involved in a more complicated and fraudulent scheme than was first thought.
Starting from December 1969 the Fiat Dino was assembled in Maranello on Ferrari's production line, alongside the 246 GT. Between 1966 and 1969 there were 3,670 2.0-litre coupés and 1,163 2.0-litre spiders made; with only 420 built, the 2400 Spider is the rarest of the Fiat's Dinos. [3]
