The ecoregion is a mosaic of wooded grassland with patches of forest. It includes areas of dry evergreen forest on the Bateke Plateau in the Republic of the Congo, and gallery forests along rivers, particularly the Congo. The species composition of the gallery forest is similar to the Congolian forests to the east. [2]
Along with the neighbouring Cross–Sanaga–Bioko coastal forests ecoregion, the area holds about 50% of the endemic plant life of tropical West Africa.Particularly important areas for plant life include the Monts de Cristal in Gabon and the Mayombe area on the borders of Republic of the Congo, Angola, and Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Pongara National Park is situated on the southern side of the Gabon Estuary and covers an area of 96,302 hectares (371.82 sq mi). The site is predominantly forested and encompasses various habitats, including mangrove forest, swamp forest, riverine forest, and seasonally-inundated forest.

Minkébé National Park (French: Parc National de Minkébé) is a national park in the extreme northeast of Gabon.It covers an area of 7,570 km 2. [1] The WWF recognized it as an area needing protection as early as 1989 and has been actively working towards protecting the forest since 1997.

[2] The national park includes various habitat types, including humid rain forest and savannah grasslands. [3] The WWF started a development programme in the park in 1996.
