During the 1970s inmates under the supervision of correction engineers built a recreation area including a 28 cell unit to house inmates who had been placed under administrative and/or disciplinary segregation. The facility offers adult education and GED preparation classes. Inmates may take courses on substance abuse.
Inmates began building the state's first prison, Central Prison, in 1870, and moved into the completed castle-like structure in December 1884. In 1881, the state leased two tracts of land near Raleigh for inmates to farm. State law 379, enacted in 1885, provided for the allowance of good time as an incentive for inmate cooperation.
Its official capacity is 1,204 inmates, one of the eight largest prisons in the state. From its opening through 2008, all prisoners were held in medium security; in December 2009, the facility was merged with the former Anson Correctional Center, which brought another three hundred Minimum Custody inmates.
