The Palestinian Authority (current de facto control in red) was created to exert partial civil control in the West Bank enclaves and in the Gaza Strip. [1] The Gaza Strip (in light red) is de jure under the Palestinian Authority [2] and de facto under the administration of the Hamas government since 2007.
An autonomous area is defined as an area of a country that has a degree of autonomy, or has freedom from an external authority. It is typical for it to be geographically distant from the country, or to be populated by a national minority. Countries that include autonomous areas are often federacies. [1]

The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics took its first official census in 1997, and has not taken one since, however they have used provisional estimates to determine the current population. [1] The most current estimate was in 2006.
