Alexandria is located in northern Madison County. Indiana State Road 9 passes through the east side of the city, leading south 11 miles (18 km) to Anderson, the county seat, and north 21 miles (34 km) to Marion. State Road 28 crosses the northern tip of Alexandria, leading west 9 miles (14 km) to Elwood and east 23 miles (37 km) to Albany.

The Richland Township Volunteer Fire Department is located on County Road 500 N, just east of Alexandria Pike on the west-central side of the township. The fire department provides fire suppression, rescue, and basic life support services to all of Richland Township and mutual aid services to surrounding areas.
The SR 128 designation ends at an intersection with SR 9 south of Alexandria. The roadway continues east as County Road 800N, which becomes McGalliard Road, in Delaware County, before becoming SR 332 at an interchange with Interstate 69.
