The reservoir and its dam have paved road access by Bully Creek Road from Vale W Highway. The reservoir was constructed by the Bureau of Reclamation in 1963 [ 2 ] and has 985 acres (399 ha) with 7 miles (11 km) of shoreline and a total capacity of 31,650 acre-feet (39,040,000 m 3 ).
Cimarron campground has been selected by the Great Outdoor Recreation Pages (GORP) as one of the 10 best campgrounds in the United States. [5] Nearby Shuree ponds offer trout fishing opportunities to children under 12 years of age.
The lake provides a source of recreation for visitors including swimming, fishing, and boating. There are lifeguards present at designated swimming areas. The park also offers 28 miles (~45.1 km) of hiking, horseback, and bicycle trails, in addition to 150 camping sites.

Campsites are $20 a night for in-state residents, and $25 a night for out-of-state visitors. There are also three cabins that are available for rent at the park.
