This is a list of lakes and reservoirs in the U.S. state of Illinois. The lakes are ordered by their unique names, (i.e. Lake Smith or Smith Lake would both be listed under "S"). Swimming, fishing, and/or boating are permitted in some of these lakes, but not all.
The lake was described in 2007 as receiving "moderate to heavy" fishing pressure from the recreationally active people of southern Illinois and southeast Missouri. [2] The city of Carbondale operates a parking lot, swimming beach, and boat dock at Cedar Lake. An admission fee is charged for the beach, but access to other sites is free of charge.
Devil's Kitchen Lake is an 810-acre (3.3 km 2) reservoir in southern Illinois, created by the damming of Grassy Creek, a tributary of Crab Orchard Lake and the Big Muddy River. Most of the lake is located in Williamson County, southwest of Marion, Illinois. The lake is accessible from Interstate 57.
Little Grassy Lake is a 1,200 acres (490 ha) reservoir in southern Illinois, created by the damming of Little Grassy Creek, a tributary of Crab Orchard Lake and the Big Muddy River. Most of the lake is located in Williamson County, southeast of Carbondale, Illinois. The lake is accessible from Giant City Road out of Carbondale, Illinois.
Rend Lake is a 13-mile (20.9 km) long, 3-mile (4.8 km) wide reservoir located in Southern Illinois in Franklin and Jefferson Counties near the town of Benton.It contains 18,900 acres (76 km 2) of water, stores 185,000 acre-feet (228,000,000 m 3) of water, and supplies over 15 million gallons of water per day to 300,000 persons in over 60 communities.
The larger of the two lakes, Loon Lake, covers 21 acres (8.5 ha) and has 0.9 miles (1.4 km) of shoreline. Loon Lake's maximum depth is 20 feet (6.1 m) and it has an average depth of 11.8 feet (3.6 m). [6] Loon Lake, sometimes known as Silver Spring Lake, was constructed in 1960 when a lowland area was excavated.
The oak-hickory forests surrounding Coffeen Lake are representative of the native cover found within the Southern Till Plain Natural Division of central and southern Illinois. A disjunct land parcel, the Ramsey Railroad Prairie, is managed by IDNR from the nearby state recreation area.Currently, the 11.26 acres (4.56 ha) railroad prairie is a strip of land of 6,500 feet (2,000 m) in length and 75 feet (23 m) in width, running north-and-south adjacent to Township Road 750E.
